The year 1864 : ( dis- dis ) closes that the leading merchants of Salt Lake City formed a company for the purpose of building a ( ware- ware ) house on the Colorado River at Callville and for the purpose of bringing goods into Utah by way of the river . It is pointed out that Mormon immigration might come into Utah by the same route . ( The warehouse was located later at the town of Callville 35 miles below the mouth of the Virgin River . Later in the year ( Compl . Exhibit 624 , page 11 ) , under the direction of President Brigham Young , a landing and site for a church warehouse was selected on the Colorado River 125 miles from St . George ( Callville ) . The record also recites that it was contemplated to have the church immigration from Europe come to Utah via Panama and the Gulf of Mexico and up the Colorado River to this landing Callville as the highest practicable head of navigation on the river . The same record discloses that freight rates were quoted from California , via the Colorado River to Hardy Landing on the Colorado . ( About 150 miles below Callville . ) Compl . Exhibit 624 , page 12 : In 1865 the records of the Church speak of the operation of a ( flat- flat ) bottomed barge , 50 feet long and 8 feet wide , ( pro- pro ) pelled by the aid of poles , oars , and a sail , which traveled from Hardyville to ( Call's Calls ) Landing .
