Show these statistics should be the vital statistics concerning populations and their growth. Beyond these, however, and perhaps more important, are the statistics of acculturation. This means blood-quantums, and survival or non-survival of inherited social language, degree of cultural assimilation into non-Indian life, a classification of Indian pbpulation of linguistic criteria as well as by cultural criteria, etc. Thus, merely at the statistical level, we find ourselves brought well into the sphere of anthropology. Within the vital statistics item, we are brought into physical anthropology. Institute Should Advance Cause of Scientific Research In another phase, the Institute should advance the cause of scientific research by coordinating the experiences and knowledge of workers in the various countries, by focusing anthropological, historical, and social research upon the problems of the Indian, and by outlining a program of research to be brought to the attention of the philanthropic foundations and the learned societies and universities in the various countries. Such research should be fostered by the Institute as will bring about an understanding of the factors of social cohesion in the Indian societies - the ways in which these societies are being affected by the alien civilizations which are impinging upon the Indian culture, the tendencies toward new social groupings and toward the formation of new social bonds, and the contribution of Indian culture to world culture, The Institute should promote studies of Indian life and institutions more particularly with reference to such subjects as the family, law, economic life, concepts and customs of land tenure, systems of education, health, and similar subjects which have a direct bearing on practical |
