English Summary: The author brings up a very interesting point for the correct solution of the Indian problem: he examines, discusses and rejects an idea, generally accepted in certain circles, that the betterment of Indian groups can be satisfactorily brought about through charity. He states: "The Indian does not ask for charity: he is not a helpless, needy person to whom society should give everything, but rather an energetic, hard-working individual who tries harder than anyone else to make unproductive land produce." 'The Indians are always ready to cooperate; they are constantly offering their services free to achieve some important social improvements for their community." "The solution of the problem does not lie in giving each Indian food, clothes or other things for himself or his family, but in helping the community by means of technical device, credit, teaching of crafts and trades, improvement of their livestock and crops, and the organization of producers' consumers and transportation cooperatives." Then Dr. Caso tells of the work of the National Indian Institute of Mexico, which he heads, in this direction. 1955 Editorial.
