Show Jnibamu&als...Wide-spread interest and participation together with a varied sports agenda characterized the 1948-49 intramural sports program. Close to two thousand students took advantage of the all-year event, with around four or five thousand individual performances. Volleyball, touch football, winter and spring bowling, and softball were played with more than thirty teams entered in each event. Basketball attracted the most interest with sixty teams competing in the fall and ninety-six signing up for winter rounds. The boxing and wrestling programs consisted of fourteen and twelve teams respectively. One hundred fourty-seven individuals battled for the ping pong title, while skiing and swimming attracted over a hundred performers each. At the time of this writing Pi Kappa Alpha (last year's winner), Beta Theta Pi, and Sigma Chi were running very close for the first place trophy. Under the direction of coach Pete Couch, the program progressed smoothly and efficiently.Managing and refereeing intramural sports are big jobs in any man's language, but Tony Simone, A. F. Robbins, John Squires (standing); and Clair Anderson, director Pete Couch, and Karl Schleckman proved capable and efficient in officiating the various events.Basketball fans will easily recognize this sextet, but the Eager Tigers, as they call themselves off the hardwod, proved versatile enough to capture first place in intramural football.
