Spirit ran high and the Redskin basketeers were favored to repeat, but Southern Cal believed otherwise. Although the Utes won the first game 58 to 43, the Trojans rallied during the second tiff to nip the Utes 49 to 47 in a last minute thriller. Thus the Redskins bowed for the first time of the season and lost one game out of the four contest series. Vern Gardner was once again high point man as he scored 17 counters the first night and 15 the second.The one loss released the mounting tension growing within the team, so Coach Vadal Peterson prepared his Utes for their annual barn-storming tour through the East. The Redskins returned to Salt Lake with three important intersectional victories over potent Eastern opponents, St. John's, Cornell, and St. Joseph's. The Utes were receiving national attention.Three Trojans appear unsuccessful in trying to prevent a tip-in under their own basket.
