Show Great painters, sculptors, singers, pianists, architects, dancers, actorsâ€"who knows how many talented Utes might some day be among the world's famous cultural leaders?Recognizing the importance of encouraging and developing the highest skill of potential artists, the University of Utah recently established a new College of Fine Arts. Designed to promote cultural interests not only on the campus but also throughout the entire state, the College has as one of its major purposes to foster concerts, exhibitions, operas, public lectures, theatrical performances, and pageants for all interested people.The University of Utah is fast becoming an influential cultural center in the West, and Dean Fairbanks offered a challenge to University students when he said, "From this section of the country must come new impetus, new creations, new hopes, expressed through the Arts, to bring forth what every civilization hopes forâ€"a Golden Age of cultural attainment."Avard FairbanksDeanSculptoring and artâ€"and up pops psychology, a side line of this dean. Studying emotions and building up the U's art school are endeavors he works for wholeheartedly. Believing Salt Lake the "Center of the West" he's trying his best to improve the production and appreciation of the varied arts of this area.Many Ute maidens develop grace, poise, and beautyâ€" and also have fun, in modern dancing classes.Maurice Abravanel gives last minute instructions to the 350 members of the combined University choruses and the Utah Symphony prior to their successful and inspiring presentation of the Missa Solemnis. |
