Show Peppermint Monday clued in as to what pa was talking about. I had no idea. I guess Jason didn't either because he had the same blank look he always did when I tried to explain chess to him. "With Russ gone, things are different now." I looked from pa to ma and waited for them to announce they were going to have another baby. Ma wasn't too old and it would be a change. I would be tied down like Andrea was after school, but it would be fun too. Maybe I would have a sister. "Ellen and I think we should move. We want to know how you feel about it." I was shocked. I would have rather had a baby, even if it was a brother- Ma had just got new carpet and draperies and the place like she wanted it. Mr. Todd was gone now too. No one had really filled his shoes yet. No one knew the good pieces of property like he had. Pa would be silly to buy some land from just anybody. "Are you asking us if we want to move, or telling us we are?" Jason was surprised at pa's approach. He usually just told us the way things were going to be. Pa looked at ma and I could tell she was a little troubled. That meant pa had just been telling us in the nicest way he knew how. We were going to move. They had already decided. "We're close to pa's farm here. The school bus stop is less than a block. " I wasn't sure why I bothered to agrue. Pa and ma had already decided. "We even have nice neighbors. Andrea's parents are always having problems of some sort with their neighbors. The Harlins are not easy to get along with." "We weren't thinking of another house in Gainesville," ma said softly. |
