Show -19- Peppermint Monday Jason sighed, the same way pa always did. "You know what - Jake's place. Were going Saturday morning. He promised Russ he'd take him to Eaton Bridge to show him some rabbits he's fixed up. It's the perfect opportunity." Opportunity, yes. Perfect, no. Something as dishonest as snooping around somebody's property, couldn't be used in the same statement as perfect. But it was exciting, and necessary for Russ' sake. Someone had to protect him from an uncivilized old coot, and since our parents refused to do anything, it was up to Jason and me. Possibly we could uncover some real evidence that Jake was a bad influence for Russ. Then pa and ma would have to listen and do something. "Saturday's fine," I said with false confidence. "Good. I didn't know whether I should ask Kelly or Mark." "No Jas, you mustn't ask anybody else. This is a family matter. No outsiders." "You're right," he said, trying to act mature. "But I was going to go with or without you. Kelly and Mark might have got a kick out of seeing the place." What he really meant was that he wasn't about to go there alone. If Jake caught someone prowling around his place, he was bound to get nasty. "It's late," Pa boomed from the other room. For an average sized man, he sure had an above average boom. His boom was a normal occurance when Jason was around. Their chemistries' just didn't mix, or they mixed too well. Somehow, when they were together, at least one of them was mad over something the other one did . I would have laughed at the situation if it had involved anyone's family but my own. |
