Show - • j y _ Peppermint Monc us, didn't damper my enthusiasm. Mr. Sonders wanted me to take part as an impromptu speaker at the meet. He said I was good at coming up with some sort of speech on the spur of the moment. I think that was supposed to be a compliment. Anyway, impromptu was fine with me, as long as I got to go. Ma wanted to know what I wanted for my birthday. I told her a video recorder. I might as well have asked for triplet sisters. A video machine was just as impossible. Ma understood me though, she wasn't like pa, she really understood me. Instead of blowing her top and going into a lengthy discussion on how tight money was right now, she just smiled and nodded. "That would be fun, alright. Maybe we can rent one for your birthday." "Yeah," I said. "I'd like that." "We can get a bunch of those space movies you like." Russ said smiling. "The kind with all those weird monsters. We can watch movies all day." Russ and I were the only ones in my family that appreciated good science fiction movies. Jason liked comedy, the warped, silly kind. Ma liked love stories and shows about social issues. I'm not sure what pa liked. I can't remember the last time he took us all to a movie. When he took ma out, which wasn't often, I don't think they went to movies. If iheydid, I don't know what kind they went to. I didn't worry much about my birthday or what I would get. Andrea thought I ought to have a slumber party like Renae did, but I didn't want to. Pa wouldn't have just disappeared all evening like Mr- Todd had. He would want to get his sleep. He would want his house quiet. He would throw a fit if Matt Carson dared show up, which I doubt he would. I was not Renae. Boys would not want to crash my party. I wouldn't want them to either. |
