Show -17- Peppermint Monday "Russ has already been there with pa," I reminded him. "They both lived through the experience." "Aren't you curious about the place?" Jason eyed my face eagerly. "Well sure, who wouldn't be. But -" "Oh, come on," he cut me off. "Let's go see it for ourselves." I couldn't believe what I was thinking. I couldn't believe what he was suggesting. Worse than that, I wanted to go. I wanted to check old Jake's place out. "Do we dare?" I looked behind me to be sure no one was there listening. "If pa and ma found out we'd be expelled from home permanently. If Jake found out - " I paused, uncertain of the right word, "we'd be dead!" "Then you'll come with me?" A fever of excitement colored Jason's cheeks, matching his firey hair. "But what if we do get caught." "We won't." Jason had made up his mind. All through supper Jason had an itch of nervousness. Just looking across the table at him made me squirm. We shouldn't have even been thinking about visiting Jake's shack, but we both were. The excitement of the adventure was pulsing through my veins. There was no turning back now, the decision, however foolish it was, had already been made. "Can I have your pie?" Russ was looking at my sliver of coconut cream pie, a pleading light in his normally dull eyes. Coconut cream pie was my favorite dessert, unless you counted sponge cake with peppermint sauce on it, which ma never made. Most of the time I wouldn't have even considered parting with dessert, especially my favorite, even for Russ. Tonight was different. Probably it was a combination of |
