Show Peppermint Monday "So?" I said unaffected. Pa had flunked kids in both history and literature before. He usually passed everybody in health. He said it was because he didn't want to discourage good attitudes toward nutrition, but I decided it was because pa's health class was so easy. He didn't know enough about it to make it hard. Pa's expertise was history and nothing more. He didn't know much more about literature and health than any other teacher. They were just two subjects assigned to him because somebody had to teach them. I guess nobody else wanted to teach them, because pa kept the same classes year after year. "So, you're going to change his mind." He was so sure of himself. He expected me to be terrified, but I wasn't. If anything, I was amused. Even if Billy did scare me and I wanted to change his grade, it wouldn't make any difference. Pa didn't change his mind easily. Ma seldom got him to do something for her. He'd never listen to me when it came to a grade. He wouldn't even listen when it was my grade we were arguing about. "Sure, anything you say. Do you want a "B" or does it have to be an "A". "Real funny, Red. Don't get sarcastic with me." His face was getting red and his eyes were bulging. "Sorry," I said even more sarcastically. "Excuse me. I have to go before I flunk lunch hour." I could hear him swearing as I walked away, but he didn't try to stop me. I wondered if Billy would bring one of his skins from an animal he had trapped for the science fair. Either that or he could display desks he had ruined. He could show the life cycle of a tree and take it up to a desk. He could show the whole process in illustrations. He could whittle for the judges too. His choices were endless. |
