Show Ferpermint Mend; roads than to entertain them for a few hours. Anyone would prefer their hands stained too. I spent a few minutes in an effort to pick up my room before raa would let me go. I didn't tell ma where I was going. I just told her I had my science fair project to work on. The east hills were covered with wild flowers of every color. The dandelions were there too, they just blended in with the golden meadow rose so it was hard to find them. I stuffed them by the handful into a plastic garbage bag I'd brought from home. I had no idea how many of the weeds it would take to make jam, so I just kept stuffing the bag fuller. It was getting cool and the sun was almost down when I reached Grandma Ruby's house. It might have been more effective if I had a skirt to hold them in, but I never wore dresses if I could avoid them. Besides hating them, they showed off my skinny, bird legs. I was laughed at enough because of my hair and braces. My bird legs would have produced hysteria. Grandma must have been watching t.v. If the television wasn't on, I never needed to knock. She heard me before I ever made it to the porch and would come to meet me. Grandma loved her television though. When it was on, you really had to knock. Even then, she always wasn't too eager to interrupt her program with a visitor- I wasn't just any old visitor. I was Carly and I had special rights. She came to the door in a flowered caftan. Grandma like flashy colors even though most of them looked terrible on her. She looked better in quiet colors like whites and pale blues, but she seldom wore them. She said if she dressed like a little, old lady, she would have to act like one. I disagreed. Grandma couldn't act old if she tried. |
