Show Peppermint Monday prom, I was once again on her black list. Grandma Ruby told me it was just a passing reaction. She predicted Renae would be bubbling over with affection when Barton wrote again. I didn't really care whether Renae was friendly or furious. Either way was a little annoying. And as for Barton writing again, I wasn't sure he would. A future senator's son, even one as dull as Barton, could choose his company. There had to be someone more exciting than Renae in Cleveland. One afternoon Andrea and I were laying on our lawn and wiggling bare toes in the spring grass. Jason had neglected the yard work he was responsible for, so the grass was extra long. It felt good on our toes though. For once I was glad Jason was behind on his work. "Are they planning to ride to Eaton Bridge this year?" a bee buzzed above my head, reminding me of Jake's silly superstition. I didn't swat it away though. I just held my head still and hoped it would fly off. "Yeah, Matt said a bunch of kids are going next Saturday. Do you still want to go this year?" Andrea and I had avoided talking about Matt much. He hadn't asked me out again or anything like that, but he smiled a lot. Sometimes he flirted a little too, but never when Andrea was in ear shot. It was an awkward situation. I had been in awkward situations before though, so it didn't worry me. "Sure, we promised each other last year. You had the mumps and couldn't go, remember? I didn't want to go alone with all the boys, so I stayed home too." I remembered how bad I had felt too. I had sat home all day, mad at Andrea for getting sick and mad at myself because I was a girl. Even Jason had gone. This year I was going for sure. With or without Andrea. |
