Show Peppermint Mania; "That wasn't so bad," Renae almost sang. "I expected it to be a lot worse." She had a few streaks of dust across her face, but her hair still looked fairly clean. She looked a lot better than Andrea. I knew she looked better than me, too. The first mile had been bad. I couldn't believe Renae had expected it to be worse than it had been. Billy wiped a drop of beer off his chin and walked toward Renae. It was a slow, clumsy walk, and I guess it was meant to scare her. I couldn't tell what it was doing to Renae, but Andrea was shivering like a naked baby in a snow storm. I drank my water in slow, little sips and ignored Billy. A sandwich would taste good now too, but I resisted that temptation. It wasn't even mid-morning yet and the boys would 1 :-ve to think I was hungry already. Andrea would have liked the suggestion though. Billy must have got to Renae too. She left her bike and walked the opposite direction. She giggled a little and when she spoke, there was a nervous twinge in her voice. "Where's the bridge anyway? Let's not just sit around." Matt started laughing. I had never heard him laugh that way, especially at Renae. Renae's face changed to a deep pink, probably about the shade of crepe paper the girls had wanted for the prom. I expected Matt to stop and apologize when he saw her face, but he didn't. He just laughed harder. Jason and Mark were laughing too. So were four or five others. The rest were just staring at Renae as if they'd heard her wrong. I hoped we had. She couldn't be that stupid. "The bridge?" Matt finally said between hysterics. "You think we're by the bridge?" He was laughing so hard tears were making his eyes water almost as much as Billy's did. |
