Show -7- Peppermint Monday it was a good thing Gainesville didn't need another farmer. Pa tries, but if we had to depend on a living from just his farming, we'd all starve. "That's twice today," Jason grinned broadly as he spoke. All seriousness had left his expression and was replaced by mischeivious amusement. "What's twice?" I didn't follow Jason's train of thought, which wasn't surprising. He thought like a kid brother. "Matt must be hunting for a girlfriend. He's been by here twice today." My chin dropped, leaving my mouth hanging wide open. Matt had never been more to me than a braid puller, slumber party wrecker, and Andrea's big brother. Andrea was a grade behind me in school, but she was still my best friend. She giggled too much, didn't like chocolate mint ice cream, and still had her Barbie doll, but she was all right. Anyway, I hadn't actually seen her playing with her Barbie for a long time, she just had it in her room. When we were kids we played with dolls a lot. My dolls are all in the basement in a cardboard box now, except my large Raggedy Ann doll that sits on my bed for decoration. "Renae likes Matt," I said after the initial shock of his implication had worn off. Renae liked boys much better than I did anyway, and had already been on a few dates. Pa said I couldn't date until I was a sophomore, which was fine with me, since I wasn't exactly on anybody's irrestible list right now. "Renae's a witch," Jason wrinkled his freckled nose and slapped his arm at a circling bee. "Max is blind is he likes old dog face." I had to laugh, but I didn't agree. Renae was a lot of things, most of them bad, but she wasn't a dog face. Ma had said once that Renae was the beauty queen type. Even though I hated to admit it, I could see what she |
