Show -28- Peppermint Monday Chapter 3 '• Spring Festival Queen "Can you believe it?" Andrea gushed at lunch hour. "Freshman girls can try out for the Spring Festival Queen this year." "Whoopdy Whoo." I said with little enthusiasm. It wasn't just the beauty contest, ma had packed meatloaf sandwiches. Besides that it was Monday. Monday was just under the dentist on my awful list. "Freshman girls don't have their figures yet. Or their walks." I grunted. "Some of them are developed," Andrea said defensively. I don't know what she was getting excited about, she wasn't even a freshman yet. And even if I was developed, as she put it, I wasn't quite the beauty queen type. Red hair, freckles, and braces belonged more on a little leaguer than a beauty contestant. "Well, anyway the student council voted to let them have two representatives from their class try out." Somehow, one or more of the Carsons were always in student council. Kids just liked them for some reason. They weren't overly good-looking, or extra smart, or super jock types, or anything, but kids liked them. Renae had set her sights for Matt, which proved my point. They're were better looking boys around, but Matt had what girls liked. My eyes skimmed the busy lunch room and settled on Renae's group. Renae's hair was perfectly styled, as usual. She was a very pretty girl, if you didn't know her. I was sure she'd be one of the freshman girls nominated. She was well out of the awkward stage most of us were still in. At least that's what Grandma Ruby called it. It's that stage where your body hasn't quite decided whether it's going to be tall or short, thin or chunky, extra "developed" or small chested.
