Show -33- Peppermint Monday meeting in the auditorium. Mr. Sonders was one of our advisors, but thank goodness he didn't do the talking. Instead, Miss Isom directed the class meeting. I had never had a class from Miss Isom, and from what I'd heard, I didn't want to. She taught Spanish and art. She had been in the army before teaching school, and from that experience she had developed a severe code of order and discipline. In my opinion, Spanish and art are not the type of structured topics she should have taught. I could picture her at some private girls' school teaching geometry and archery, exact subjects. "This meeting is to be short and to the point," she barked. "As you are all well aware, the Spring Festival Queen contest is only two weeks away. This year, our student council elected to give freshman girls the opportunity to compete also. We must select two girls from this class to represent us." She outlined the rest of the details in crisp tones, stopping only once to quiet Billy Crowley. He was making cat calls. I bet if Billy was interested in Spanish or art he wouldn't have his pocketknife. He wouldn't be so loud-mouthed all of the time either. Miss Isom had a way of putting people in their places. Miss Isom opened the nominations, and one of Renae's group immediately raised her hand. "I nominate Renae Todd,"she said with smug satisfaction,, Billy let out a loud grunting sound like a pig would make, and a bunch of boys in the back started snickering. I knew Billy and Renae didn't get along. Billy wasn't popular, good-looking, rich, or even an athlete. He was a grubby bully, lacking everything that made you anybody in Renae's book. I'm sure he felt the same about her, especially if it meant trouble |
