Show Peppermint Monday I told Andrea about Billy's orders at lunch. I also told her I was getting desperate about the science fair. She was concentrating on my lemon cupcake and didn't really listen to my problems. I didn't share because I liked cupcakes. Anyway, she was drinking grapefruit juice, the sour, unsweetened kind. It would taste terrible with a lemon cupcake. "Just go pick a bunch of dandelions and drop them on Grandma's porch. She'd have to help you then." Andrea wasn't serious. She still thought I was nuts to even waste time thinking about the jam. She'd offered to help me catch bugs for an insect board, but I wasn't interested. Andrea hated bugs anyway. She must have felt awful guilty about her cat. Otherwise she would volunteer her services for an insect board. "That's it." I said enthusiastically. I'd have given her my cupcake if I hadn't already finished it. "What's it?" "You're right. Grandma Ruby will give in if I go to all the work of collecting the dandelions." I already had her feeling bad because she'd turned me down. Grandma Ruby hated to say no to me or Andrea. Andrea didn't look as convinced as I was. "I wasn't really serious," she said slowly- "That's a lot of work to go to. Your hands would be all stained from picking too." She sounded more like Renae than Andrea. Andrea had never been afraid of getting her hands dirty. I guess she just didn't want me to be disappointed. I knew I wouldn't be. Andrea had to babysit the twins after school, so she couldn't help me. I knew she hadn't used the twins just for an excuse either. They were little monsters and it would be a lot easier to traipse around the hills and back |
