Show Peppermint Monday We're going to need to do some experimenting. You can eat supper with me.' I called while Grandma Ruby gathered jars, lids, cookers, and sugar. Jason answered the phone and hollered for ma. "She's busy with Russ right now. What do ya want?" "I'm at Grandma Ruby's working on my science fair project. I can't make it home for supper. Is that okay with her?" "Sure," Jason said after more hollering. "You wouldn't want to eat here anyway. It's some kind of rice stuff. It looks awful." I knew the stuff he meant and I was glad I could eat here. Grandma Ruby likedfrozen pizza and always kept a few on hand. I could easily talk her into one of those. Grandma was already washing jars though. It would be a while before we were ready for pizza. "Have you ever tasted a dandelion? They don't have the best taste." Grandma took some boxes of pectin from her lower shelf and tossed it on the cupboard. "I don't know how much sugar to add, or if it needs lemon juice, or anything. I can't promise miracles, Carly. I can't guarantee this jam will win you a blue ribbon." "But you can't guarantee it won't either. Besides, this way I'll at least have something for the science fair." I'd given up on making myself famous vith the stuff. I hadn't given up on producing some sort of semi-eatable jam. I washed the dandelions and plucked the yellow flower off of -the tops. My hands may have been a little stained before, but now they were mustard yellow. I chewed on one stem and decided it needed a lot of sugar or something. I don't think lemon juice was the answer. It needed something sweet. Real sweet. |
