Show -124- Feppermint Monday of Renae. I guess Barton had come through after all. Renae was probably not throwing herself at Matt because of Barton. Whatever the reason was, I was glad. I had a reason to get a prom dress now. The windows still needed some work but I went inside to find ma. I passed Russ on the porch. He was asleep in the chair, Cheddar beside him. He had a peaceful, relaxed look, the kind he never had when he was awake. I imagine he was having a good dream. Today was a day for dreaming. I told ma Matt had asked me to the prom. I told her I would need a dress and'how I wanted it to be. I even told her that Andrea could have been behind it. Andrea knew I thought it would be heavenly to go. She could have coaxed Matt. "I don't think so, dear." Ma had said with a youthful smile that erased some of her worry lines. "Boys don't do things like that for sisters. I'm sure Matt just wanted you to go with him." I hoped she was right. Even if she wasn't, I still had a date. That alone was something for a freshman girl, especially a tall, thin, freckly, redheaded freshman. Barton had not written Renae. It was obvious at lunch. Renae was following Matt everywhere. I wondered if she knew how foolish she looked. Andrea was disgusted too. But she was disgusted at Matt. "I wish he'd just ask her so she'd quit embarrassing herself. He enjoys her chasing him around. It makes him feel macho." Andrea didn't know. She must not have told Matt to ask me. I wasn't sure how to tell her I had a date with her brother. I wasn't sure if she'd like the idea. Rather than think about it awhile, I just burst it out. "Matt asked me to the prom.
