Show Peppermint i-londay Posters were appearing everywhere in the school halls. I wasn't a poster maker. Most of mine were quite drab compared to Kent Harlin's. Jason and his friends had spent hours making a huge one that really wasn't fit to be seen. It had a headless horseman in the middle of the poster. It was a huge, black horse, that surprisingly enough, did look like a horse. I guess Mark could draw. Jason sure couldn't. Anyway, the horseman was under the words "Get ahead with Hodkins. Vote for Carly." I don't think it would win me many votes, but I needed all of the help available. Billy Crowley liked the poster, if his vote made much difference. I wasn't sure he would vote for me just because of a poster, anyway. He was flunking pa's class. But I also knew Billy and Kent were opposites in every way. Kent was clean, smart, popular, and athletic. Billy was far from any of those qualities. When it came to votes though, Billy's was as important as anybody elsefe. Maybe more so if there was a way to stuff the ballot box. "This is real class, Red." I didn't know how long he had been admiring the poster, but his eyes were bulging in approval. "Thanks," I said. What else could I say. The poster had about as much class as Billy did. "Did you draw the horse?" "No," I said in shock. I'd die if anyone else thought I had. "I didn't think you had." Billy turned his watery eyes back to the poster- "This is good work." That would have hurt coming from anyone but Billy. The posters I had made were not overly exciting, but they were not the crude work of eleven-year- olds either. I would have liked to spit at Billy and rip the mess off |
