Show -44- Peppermint Monday They slowly vanished from sight, leaving their dust for me to walk in. It was hours later when I got home. Jake•s mule was by the dogwood tree, not even tied up. Jake had him trained well. Jake and Russ were nowhere in sight, and I didn't go looking for them. Ma gave me a grateful look when I entered the house. She didn't say anything because pa was with her, but I'm sure she understood how hard it had been for me to do the assigned errand. She just hadn't known how hard. I got caught up in the weekfe activities after that. In fact I enjoyed all of it except Renae's part in the queen contest. She wore an emerald green dress that was way too old for her, and sang a popular song in her too high voice. She did smile a lot though, and walk like a model. It was nice to know all of her charm school lessons had come in handy. Nobody even made animal noises from the audience. They just clapped. I was glad when the contest was over. They announced the winners that night at the dance. Marcy won, thank goodness, and a junior named Gloria was her first attendant. Renae came in third, which was unusual for a sophomore girl, much less a freshman . I expected her to be disappointed, but if she was she didn't show it. She was with Matt Carson, and I guess that was her main prize anyway., Andrea and I danced a few dances with some freshman boys that acted Jason's age, but at least we danced. The sophomores won the decorating contest, which was no major disappointment since I hadn't helped at all. It was over at last, another Spring Festival. I couldn't help but wonder how it felt to wear a crown. It would probably have tangled my naturally curly hair more, but it was a thought anyway. |
