Show -34- Peppermint Monday with Miss Isom again, which it did. Her thin face got slowly red, blotching with even redder spots on each cheek. Without a word she strode down the aisle to where Billy was draped over his chair. She grabbed him by the shoulder and almost dragged him out of the auditorium. Nobody said a word, not even Billy. He didn't struggle either. He'd had run-ins with her before. She came back seconds later, cool and collected once more. Tracy Larsen, Margaret Higgins, and Wendy Spencer were all nominated, and no more sounds came from the back where the boys were sitting. I guess they had learned their lesson, and that Miss Isom meant business. The four girls left the room, and we had to vote for two of them. I liked Wendy the best, and she was no more developed than I was. Tracy was new, so I didn't know much about her yet, and Margaret was too fat to look pretty in a formal. I voted for Wendy, and took a chance on Tracy. Renae didn't need my vote. Between her group, and most of the boys, she won easily. Tracy was the other contestant chosen. The whole meeting only lasted twenty minutes and I could tell Miss Isom was pleased, more with herself than our class, but still pleased. I saw Renae later, by her locker, looking radiant over her big chance. I don't know why she was trying to act pleased and surprised. Everybody knew she would be one of the girls from our class. Even those who didn't like her knew. I would've liked to throw my saxophone case at her and wipe off her false smile, but I'd have probably been expelled for attacking her again. Maybe Billy would take care of her anyway. At least it was a thought worth thinking about. "Well?" Andrea questioned after we met at our usual place. Andrea |
