That it ztppears by the documents nccompauying this report, that the objects of each of the exploring expeditions, together with the instructions fot· executing them, were communicated to, and approved by the president of the United States; that the conduct of captain Pike, in each of the cxpe<)itions, also met with the approbation of the president, and that the information obtained and communicated to the exec utive on the subjects of his instructions, and particub.rly in relation to the source of the Mississippi and the natives in that quarter, and the country generally, as well on the Upper Mississippi as that bctw~,;c..:n the Arkansaw, and the Missomi, and on the borders of the latter extensive river to its source, and the country adjacent, is highly interesting iu a political, geographical and historiaal view; and that although no special encouragement was given to the individuals who performed these lnborious aJHl clan· gerous expeditions, yet it was but reasonable fo1· them, l;hould they fortunately succeed in the objects, to expect some reg-ard from go· vernment; that the zeal, pcrsevct•ancc, antl intelligence of captain }>ike, as commander, has been meritorious, and the conduct of the individuals generally who composed the parties respecti,,cJy, has been faithful, and the exertions arduous. Although no special encouragement was ~iven to the individua~ s, who performed these laboriou!i and dangerous e xpeditions, ~et 1t ~vas ~ut reasonable for them, should they fortunately succeed m thc1r ObJects, to expect a liberal reward from the government ; and as there can be no reasonable doubt of the zeal, pen;cvc 1 ancc and intelligence of the commander, or of the faithful conduct and ~mluous exertions of the individuals generally, composing the respective parties, it may, I trust, be presumed, that no obj ection will o.e opposed to a reasonable compensation for such meritorious serVIces.
