Killed one deer. Distance 18 miles. 1st February, Sunday.-Lai<l out the place for out works, and went out hunting . 2d February, Monday.-The doctor anJ myself went out to hunt, and with great difficul ty, by night, killed one deer, at the distance of seven or eight miles from camp, which wr carried in. Sd February, Tucsday.-Spcnt in r cJding, &c. 4th February, Wcdncsday.-W ent out hunting, but could not kill any thing. One of 1ny men killed a deer. 5th February, Thursday.-The <.loctor and myself went out to hunt, and after chasing some deer for several hours, without success, we ascended a high hill, which lay south of our camp, from whence we had a view of all the prairie and rivers to the north of us; it was at the same time one of the most sublime and beautiful inland pro .. spects ever presented to the eyes of man. The prairie lying nearly north and south, was probably 60 miles by 45. The maiu,·ivcr Lui>t.iug uut uf tlw western mountain, and meeting from the north-cast, a large branch, wllicb divides the chain of mountains, proceeds down~th prairie, making many large and beautifUl islands, one of which l judge contains 100,000 acres of land, all meadow ground, covered with innumerable herds of deer ; about si.- miles &om the mountains which cross the prairie, at the south tnd, a branch of 12 steps wide, pays its tribute to the mM stream from the west course.
