Show Reservoir Canal, until 1990, when the canal was unofficially designated as the Murdock Canal, in honor of Joseph R. Murdock, president of the original Provo Reservoir Company. National Register Assessment: Eligible Class III Pedestrian Survey A total of 75.1 acres was subjected to a Class III pedestrian survey. The acreage surveyed occurs in six small parcels distributed across the route of the corridor and numbered from east to west (Figures 1-4). Each survey area is briefly described below. No evidence was found in any of the pedestrian survey areas for any archaeological sites or other cultural resources. Description of Survey Areas . Survey Area 1 - A small irregular, rectangle-shaped 10.4 acre parcel bordering the south side of 7800 South, between the West Jordan Cemetery to the west and the Jordan River to the east. The western boundary of the parcel is defmed by the North Jordan Canal (Figure 2). No historic properties were found. Survey Area 2 - A rhomboidal shaped parcel located just north of the Gardner Mountain View golf course and east of 2700 East. The surveyed area equals 3.7 acres. The parcel is an open area flanking the canal, with relatively heavy vegetation in some parts, particularly the southern half (Figure 3). No historic properties were found. Survey Area 3 - A 14.6 acre, approximately triangularly-shaped parcel whose southern border is defined by the Utah Lake Distributing Canal, defines survey area 3 (Figure 3). The area consists of relatively open fields. The northern parcel boundary follows the southwest to northeast line of the Old Bingham Highway, continuing along the same line after the highway turns to the north, along the proposed route of the project corridor. The helipad for Jordan Valley Hospital is located just south of the parcel. No historic properties were found. Survey Area 4 - This survey area is roughly diamond shaped and covers 3.0 acres. It is situated at the intersection of the Old Bingham Highway and 4800 West, in a residential area, with the highway forming the southern border of the parcel, and 4800 West defining the western boundary. The eastern edge of the unit backs up to the end of a cul-de-sac (Figure 4). The parcel is currently an open field which appears to have been cultivated in the past. No historic properties were found. Survey Area 5 - A linear survey area approximately 50 meters wide and 3 kilometers long parallels electric power lines lying 500 meters to the west (Figure 4). The parcel proceeds in a north-south direction for 2 kilometers (along the 5600 West line) before turning southeast and continuing for one additional kilometer. The surveyed area covers 38.5 acres which is comprised of plowed open fields, partially under cultivation, but which are currently in the process of being built-up into a large, residential development. The linear survey crosses both Bingham Creek and an irrigation aqueduct. No historic properties were found. Survey Area 6 - A rhomboidal shaped parcel located just north of Old Bingham Highway at 5600 West. The surveyed area equals 7.9 acres. The area is an open area flanked by Old Bingham Highway on the south and light industry (Harsco Corporation) on the north. The parcel is currently an open field (Figure 4) which appears to have been cultivated in the past. No historical properties were found 21 |
