Show Historic Building Inventory Area 4 - This inventory area is located within a portion of Chesterfield at approximately 2770 South and immediately east of Redwood Road. The proposed transportation corridor follows the north side of the Decker Lake Canal on a roughly east to west alignment from the Jordan River to the Brighton Canal. At this point, the Decker Lake Canal has been placed in an underground culvert which runs from the point between the east end of Southgate and Claybourne Streets over to the outlet of Decker Lake. The proposed TRAX line would follow this same utility easement which crosses across the rear portion of lots from the south side of Southgate Street and the north side of Claybourne Avenue. The historic building inventory in this area, therefore, examined structures located on both Southgate and Claybourne if they backed up to the proposed corridor. On Southgate Avenue the inventory included all the structures on the south side of the street in the block immediately east of Lester Street. All of the buildings on the south side of Southgate between Lester Street and Redwood Road are either modem or so significantly modified that there is virtually no chance that they are eligible if they are in fact more than 50 years old. The modifications are so extensive to several of the structures that it was impossible to estimate their age during the survey, and several might meet the age criteria for the NRHP, but are ineligible due to a loss of integrity. Since this block obviously contained no historic properties, it was not inventoried. None of the homes on the north side of Southgate were inventoried since they are out of the APE. On Claybourne Avenue the entire north side of the street was inventoried from Redwood Road to the east end of the street a block east of Lester Street. Summary Thirty-eight buildings were identified within the APE of the project corridor (Table 2). Each building was evaluated in terms of the four eligibility categories identified within the NRHP. Following is a brief summary of findings of eligibility for the properties: Category A: No buildings within the survey corridor qualified as exceptional building examples likely to be eligible for individual nomination to the NRHP. Category B: Eight buildings met the age and integrity requirements for the Register, but exhibit lesser quality. These structures qualify as contributing resources within an historic district, but are not individually eligible for the NRHP. All are single, residential dwellings. Five of the structures are WWII-Era cottages, one is a Foursquare (box)-style building, while the other two buildings were identified as "Other" residential structures. Category C: Twenty-four buildings were designated as buildings meeting the age criteria, and are therefore "historic," but either had lost integrity due to heavy modification, or did not meet any ofthe four evaluation criteria of significance established by the NRHP. Seven of the structures exhibited extremely "heavy" modification. Six buildings were identified as WWII-Era cottages, three as Period cottages (1910-1935), two were Foursquare (box)-style structures, and thirteen buildings fell under the category of "Other."
