Show EARL E. HANSEN: Reminiscent of a character out of Barnaby Conrad, Earl learned to sail in the Navy, then struck out on his own to navigate a ketch to the South Seas and the West Indies. Other interests have included skiing, working as a lifeguard, and yacht racing. A rugged and independent man, he is seldom seen without his pipe and corduroy jacket. Earl has consistently applied his natural pragmatic bent to sorting out the pertinent from the "mickey mouse" material in medical school, attaining an almost straight "A" average and earning the respect of his classmates as a scholastic leader. Earl's premedical work was done at Los Angeles Valley College and UCLA. While in Medical School he has done research in the Division of Gastroenterology on liver metabolism and has served first as a lab technician and then as an extern at St. Mark's Hospital. He plans to complete a straight medical internship and a residency in medicine, followed by private practice in general internal medicine. VAL G. HEMMING: Val was raised in Rexburg, Idaho, and came to Utah via Idaho State, Ricks College, and an LDS mission in Sweden. At Utah he roomed with a fellow bachelor and entomologist, "Uncle Skip." However, his girlchasing days were ended abruptly in 1962, and today he and Al have an "extremely advanced, 2 y.o. w/f" to show for it all. Val has always been an avid coin collector, and since joining the Air Force senior program, has been collecting plenty of coin. (Prior to this the Hemmings were known as the family that could live on $166 per month.) Val was junior class president. Last summer he worked in pediatric neurology at American Fork. This resulted in a paper entitled Atypical Hurlers Syndrome Heparin-50 4 Type Mucopolysaccharidosis (1ft please you!), which he presented at the Western Society for Pediatric Research. After this auspicious start, Val's future seems to be pediatric neurologic research. 53 |
