Show 1teventive Medicine George Edison is our Preventive Medicine Man. He grabbed us for our physical examinations when we entered medical school, and he stuck with us as we developed our positive PPD' s and the various symptomatology we saw on the wards. Throughout medical school he doggedly bombarded us with vaccinations, polio sugar cubes, chest X-rays, and the other procedures of prevention (excluding, fortunately, proctoscopy; though after his course we're not sure how we managed to get through without it). Preventive Medicine was taught at ten o'clock Saturday morning from December through June, and this was particularly unfortunate because that was precisely the time we were trying to sleep, having just been tucked in by the Department of Radiology. Dr. Edison would characteristically awaken us with his introduction to the visiting speaker, and just as cha racteri stica lly, the introduction was more entertaining, thought provoking and relevant than the speech. This was not always the case, however. We remember particularly the inflamed discussion of V.D. by a gentleman who really knew where his interests were laid; and we remember the sweet, gray-haired woman who was loudly concerned about our naivete about sex. Another guest speaker who caught our imagination was the doctor who does everything (including the proctoscopy) for one year, satisfaction fully guaranteed, for "less than the cost of a pack of cigarettes a day." "Do any of you know anything about preventive medicine? ... Do any of you want to learn about preventive medicine? ... Do any of you care about preventive medicine?" 36 During medical school we met few instructors who were greater individualists or more interesting personalities than Dr. George R. Edison. Dr. Edison's course was well conceived, but unfortunately, less well executed. Many of the topics were timely and potentially thought provoking, but unfortunately, it was Saturday, and many of the speakers had a knack for going on and on and on ...
