Our day on the pediatric service starts at eight o'clock with work rounds. Then we have half an hour catching up on lab work before it's ten o'clock and time for student rounds with one of the senior staff. These rounds are usually informative, but the staff men have a little game they play called "One-Up The Student." On one occasion Dr. Done quizzed us about hepatic enzymes for conjugation of bilirubin. Naturally, he found our answer inadequate and proceeded to give a careful discussion of the glucuronyl transferase system. He concluded. with, "You should know this better than I: you learned it only two years ago; it's been over ten years for me." (It wasn't ten years since he did his current research on the effects of drugs on the glucuronyl transferase system, but then it wouldn't have been one-up if he'd told us that.) "Ha, ha! And you thought it was dig. intoxication!" "See, lmuran can make you beautiful." We spend the afternoon in well-baby clinic, then gulp a quick jello pudding and fight for the left-over geriatric mutton in the "ptomaine kitchen." This energy- rich dinner gives us the stamina to face the parents of the croup that's still waiting to be worked up. It's now ten-thirty P.M. and time to start our last IV before leaving. 30 "It's recommended by the AMA and Good Housekeeping." |
