Show Anatom~- Histo[o&J Our memory of the Department of Anatomy will undoubtedly remain vivid. The concern of the Professor, Dr. Thomas F. Dougherty, to make our initial step in medical school rewarding permeated the lecture room on our first day in histology. This initial impression was followed by lectures enlightening us on the periodicity of collagen and the questionable genealogy of lymphocytes and fibroblasts, and by thrilling, wild-life movies of cells "yumpin' und schwimmin' und haben ein hellavu gut time." The histology laboratory was handled by Xenia Kharetchko (who was genuinely concerned with our education), Dr. Gottlieb Schneebeli (who was genuinely concerned with what "Dr. Dougherty says ... "), and Dr. "Wally" Stevens (who must have been genuinely concerned with something other than collagen). These lab instructors consistently demonstrated an amazing knack for arriving at different decisions as to what we were really seeing under our microscopes. Our first experience in Gross Anatomy was filled with many anxieties. Fortunately, our guide through this ordeal was Dr. E. I. Hashimoto. His pictorial descriptions of the various structures of the body made the task measurably easier. Unfortunately, however, The Old Irishman was the only bright spot in a course that should have been important to us but instead was too frequently a drudge. We're not sure whether Dr. Hashimoto was assisted by Ors. Jee and Franco or whether they just compounded the problem. The essence of the difficulty was lack of selectivity of subject matter. Perhaps if more practicing surgeons and internists lectured in Anatomy we would have been provided with some frame of reference in regard to what's important and useful. After all, many of us were there because we wanted to become doctors. •'The seat of the soul resides right here.·· f You'd think they'd provide better accommodations for the house staff. "Dr. Dougherty will show you cells yumpin' und schwimmin'!'' "The recurrent laryngeal courses through Hesselbach's triangle right here." "I love collagen." "Bone are the most important structure in the body." Agent 007 |
