Show 31 March 2010 Russell Jacobs So, the next day, we were all ready, and, uh, we were ... that pig, as I recall, was so ... way too heavy. Way too heavy. I don't know why it was so heavy. We must have planned on more water because of the temperature, I guess. Just put more water in the bag, in the pig. And so, Dad came over with us, and I jumped on the rope and started jumaring up and then hauling up the pig. And I was so anxious. I mean, I knew we were gonna be successful on this climb. I mean, Ijust. .. everything was ... the force was with us. Um, so we got up, and I was in shorts, and, of course, I've got knee pads on because, you know, you have hanging belays. So, knee pads are a necessity. Um, you're actually facing the rock in a butt bag, and then your knees are up against the wall, so you gotta have knee pads. Um, and then I covered them with duct tape just for extra protection, so they don't rip out on you. And we got to Sickle, and I'm just biting at the bit. I'm ready, you know. And Ted's sort of ... And, I don't know, it seemed like I just had to keep the fire going somehow. Um, it was .. .itjust seemed like it was being blown out from time to time. I mean, I was ... I jumared up those fixed ropes like they were .. .like I was flying. And Ted would come up after me, and, you know, he's huffing and puffing a little, and then, uh, from there, I thought, well let's ... I wanna take this pig up to the top of the Sickle, you know, right at the base of a 5.9 sort of left-facing, uh, crack, which is the blade of the Sickle, and then you'd climb up and over that to the point where you'd do the pendulum right up to and below Dolt Hole. And I didn't want to use any ropes. I just dragged that thing over there, and I climbed these steps. But you're ... you know, one little mishap, and you're off the ledge, and you're powder. You know, you'll. .. you know, it's ... 9 |
