Show Russell Jacobs 6 January 2010 RJ: But they were, by the time we got to them, they were rappelling every day just to film that part on the Zig Zags. And so they were ... they had accomplished all of that. They were on the summit. They were filming Art Higby and his partner coiling their ropes as the sun was setting. And it's a film now, and I've never seen it, but it' s around. Um, first free climb of Half Dome or whatever, the Northwest Face of Half Dome. We were able to meet Tom Frost, the famous ... ! don't want to say infamous . .. the famous Tom Frost and one of the Lowe brothers. But, I mean, Tom was like ... you know, he was an icon. I mean, he was like the godfather of climbing in Yosemite. And they all invited us ... they were very warm. We actually had cleaned a couple of pieces that the boys had left in the Zig Zags that belonged to them. We cleaned, uh, took them out and were able to get them out of the crack where they were not able to. I don't know why that happened. But there were only a few pieces and, of course, they were stashed with .. . amongst all the junk we had taken. I mean, there was no way we could rifle through it at that point and find them. Uh, but they invited us down to their camp just off of the stairs that were built, what, a hundred years before. Right there, they had a camp established. And they had been there a week, you know, doing all this filming. MD: Um-hum. RJ: But because ... MD: Because you had to get back? RJ: Right. We had to get back, so we should have taken the opportunity to spend some time with those gentlemen because it would have been a great opportunity to hang out with, you know, those guys. MD: Um-hum. 29 |
