Show Russell Jacobs 25 November 2009 follow me along ... or come with me to familiarize ... " He was familiarizing me with the sport. At the same time, he was teaching me how to fall and, uh, land, but during that time, I would .. .I toured all of Germany in his brand new Audi. Any time he dropped a hat and wanted me to come, my battery commander would go out and find me. MD: Um-hum. RJ: And I would .. .I toured Europe. 'Er Germany with this command sergeant major. And right at the very end before I went to Garmisch, uh, I jumped twice. I jumped twice. MD: Um, so, you know, through your experiences in Germany here, you still haven't climbed yet I take it? RJ: Hadn't climbed yet. I went on the ski patrol. Um, I met with this big-time climber, who during the summer time took advantage of the Alps. And the Alps, I mean, that's where climbing started. You know, the guys that are soloing all, you know, all the six thousand meter peaks. You know, I mean, Reinhold Messner being one of them. I mean, he's ... you know, and there's many, many routes. I mean there's really, really monstrous routes in Europe that hold enormous respect and have always been on my hit list. It's just very difficult to find someone from here in the States who will actually go over there and have the wherewithal and the means and the time and the drive to want to do some of those. But I managed a few, a few of 'em. MD: Um-hum. 20 |
