Show Russell Jacobs 9 December 2009 RJ: And, uh, the gentleman that he sent up, uh, with our help piled all our gear and tethered it to the mules, two mules and two horses. Brought us back and we had trucks waiting for us that Jorasmo had arranged to continue us back to, uh , Huaraz. MD: Um-hum. RJ: Uh, while we were hiking out ... and we were spread out all of us ... uh, you know, we were a bit thinner. MD: Um-hum. RJ: But still eager, you know. And you know, we were fit. But we were spread out, uh, you know, probably half a mile between all four of us each, just meandering out on our own. The horses were down a ways. And I think, the pack that, uh, the backpack that my, that I had, uh, which was a Jansport frame and external pack, which is basically obsolete these days .... MD: Um-hum. RJ: It's not .. .it's never .. .it's not used. It was on a horse and the horse got skittish and threw it into a briar patch and bent the frame a little bit, uh, and punctured my thermarest. So I didn't have a patch kit or a means to straighten my frame. But the frame wasn't bad enough where I couldn't use it for our next little adventure. MD: Um-hum. RJ: The therma-rest was. It was punctured, and no air was ... stayed in my therma-rest. But it still insulated me on the ice. I still had to use it. So we managed to get back to Huaraz, and we spent, I'd say, four days, uh, in Huaraz getting more food and things that we needed to climb Huascaran. Okay, so again, Jorasmo is still, um, with us and would be for this next adventure. We weren't sure how long this climb would take, but we 19 |
