Show THE FOLLOWING IS AN INTERVIEW WITH RUSSELL JACOBS, RECORDED ON MARCH 10, 2010. THE INTERVIEWER IS MATT DRISCOLL. THE INTERVIEW IS PART OF THE OUTDOOR RECREATION HISTORY PROJECT, TAPE# U-2083. MD: Today is March 10th, 2010. I'm Matt Driscoll, speaking with Russell Jacobs again, and, uh, today we're going to talk about Russell's trip, um, to the Salathe Wall in Yosemite in the early-90s. So, Russell, where do you want to start with this? RJ: Uh, actually the Salathe was, uh, climbed by myself and George Rosenthal in the very heart of the summer .. .it was actually when summer started, June 21st, we were halfway up the wall, uh, in 1986. MD: Okay. Mid-80s, then. RJ: Um, I picked George ... actually, I didn't have any climbing partner, to do the Salathe, picked out, and I was in search for a reliable partner. So, I would go up, you know, as often as I could to Little Cottonwood Canyon and kind of bang around there a little bit and watch people climb and, uh, I think that's how I came across George. Met him on, oh, an area just west of the Green A Gully. He and, I think, a couple of his friends were climbing in the area, and I just kind of watched a little bit, from a close vantage point and noticed his technique and, uh, his way with the granite and, uh, I thought perhaps he was a, you know ... would be a good partner. Um, I talked to him a little bit about it, and he seemed to think that's maybe something that he'd be ready for as well. So, we climbed together, you know, for probably three or four months, um, late winter, early spring. And just kind of, uh, became compatible with each other, kind of, uh, in anticipation of going out into Yosemite and attempting the Salathe Wall. 1 |
