Show 31 March 2010 Russell Jacobs hurriedly fixed to Sickle Ledge for the second time. We both kind of whipped through it pretty quickly, knowing that we'd already done it before. It wasn't a big deal. You know, it was .. .I don't think we used a lot of effort in accomplishing it. MD: Did you ... did you approach that second pitch in a different way? RJ: That second pitch, I don't know how we did it. MD: Because you mentioned doing it with two ropes as an alternative. RJ: Yes. And I don't ... we must have. We must have done that. I think that I must have taken two ropes up the second time. You take two ropes anyway, because one's the haul line. Even though we weren't hauling on that section, we may have just dragged a line, had one packed. I think we may have needed three lines to get off of Sickle. But we would have dragged one anyway, instead of having it packed, to fix off of Sickle to the deck. So, we would have two ropes. And I must have fastened the end to my harness in anticipation of using both as a belay. One, for the first crack that fizzles out, and then, I could be lowered over to the second crack, climb up to and level with the top of the first crack and a little bit higher before I started using the second rope. I must have done that. 'Cause it seemed like we had no problem. We got through it quite quickly. And then fixed all the way down and, um, I think that by that .. .I don't even think my folks were over and watched us do any of that. I think they were ... after the long drive, I think they settled in for a little bit of a respite over at their tent cabin that they reserved. Um, that was .. .I recall it being a little warmer than usual for this time of year. So, I think they were just taking in a little bit of shade in their tent. Which is no big deal because this is just kind of mundane stuff anyway. I mean, the real stuff is really what you ... when you get higher above the pines, and you have a vantage point from the Meadow, you know. 8 |
