Show 9 December 2009 Russell Jacobs MD: Yeah, I'm sure after the previous nights, huh. RJ: Yes. And so, uh, we regrouped. And, uh , we had one more peak that we wanted to do before we left, just to cap our acclimatization off. MD: Um-hum. RJ: Uh, and that was Urus Mountain. And Urus, uh, was slightly under, uh . . .it was closer to probably eighteen, eighteen and a half. Uh, it was one of the smaller peaks in the cirque. And we outfitted Jorasmo for this trip. And certainly this was, uh, probably the only time up to that point that he'd ever been, uh, outfitted with mountaineering equipment. MD: Um-hum. RJ: We fitted him with boots, parka, gloves, one ice axe, hat, and then we tethered him between us. But we got him almost to the summit. The summit was quite precarious and, uh, he didn't want to do the last step to the summit because it was ... it was like a knife blade on top and, uh ... but a few of us did and, of course, we ' re tethered to ... with someone, that in case it collapsed we wouldn't, you know, see our demise. So .. . MD: Um-hum. RJ: It was a highlight in his career at that point. And he very, very well appreciated us going the extra mile and made the effort for him to achieve, uh, the success of reaching the summit so ... MD: So did you bring extra gear with him in mind that. .. ? RJ: Yes. Yeah, we had extra clothing and tools and, oh, we had so much gear when we .. . we took with us . MD: Um-hum. 17 |
