PERUVIANS Between the months of April and October, northern Utah parks are full of Latinos who go to support their favorite soccer team, one of the main sports of our lands. The Fraternidad El Salvador, the Academia do Brasil and especially the Club Deportivo Socio-Cultural Perú are among the groups that actively participate. An elimination soccer tournament can attract up to 500 spectators and when Club Perú plays, they often sell their soft drink, Inca Cola, and traditional snacks like picarones, anticuchos, arroz con pollo and parrilladas. The Club Perú serves a community of almost 700 families. They have become famous for organizing elegant dances with orchestras playing tropical music which we don't often hear in Utah. To encourage artists from Perú and other Latin American countries, the Club Perú occasionally presents peñas that feature folk, ethnic and fine arts. At these events we have come to appreciate the poetry of Martha Merino, the paintings of Ricardo Merino, the Andean sketches on fabric by Beatriz Murphy and performances In addition to speaking Spanish, some Utah Hispanics also maintain Indian languages such as Aymara and Quechua, two ancient languages spoken by people descended from the Incas. Santos and Luzmila Arrambide of Ogden are dedicated to preserving the language and culture of the Quechua Indians through the traditional melodies and lyrics learned while growing up in highland ranching regions of Perú. Their son, Santos, Jr., continúes the family musical tradition as a member of Formula Latina.
