Russell National Wildlife Service P.O. Box 698 Lewistown, Montana 59457 Dear Dan: I apologize for neglecting the CMR planning the last year. I stayed in Utah a year, returning in September for my husband's spinal surgery in Madison. He was in the hospital nearly sox months and is still on cruthces and a walker - recovering very slowly. I think I told you I helped form a group to see what could be done about the CUP. We've made some noise - and maybe some headway! After much manipulating we got Gerry Kinghorn, Director of Water Quality Management in Salt Lake City, to testify at Appropriations hearings in Washington about the alternatives in SLC for water management (dual system) to the CUP and cheaper by . . The problem is to get the political clout developed to pursuade Gunn McKay, Sen. Garn, Sen. Hatch, Congressman Marriott that there are viable alternatives! I went to Washington to testify and attend a National Dam Conference, early April, met with McKay and Aides to Garn and Hatch and they all deny that the alternative plans exist! » We've badgered the BuRec. about costs - but can get no written answers to our cost questionnaire on the Bonneville Unit. Now we are commenting on the Bonneville M & I System - up until now called the Jordanelle! Withour public hearings, the Bureau has changed the Strawberry Collection System to M & I ! I'm National Co-Chairman, pending whatever I do or can do to get back to Utah. If I could get funds or a grant we could retire and return together! What I'm trying to work out! You might be interested to know that the Sunday PM meeting of the Dam Conference our group - those associated with dam projects in the Colorado River Basin States - discussed strategy and formed a Coalition for Responsible Managment of the Colorado River Basin. We held a National Press Conference and charged the BuRec with multi-billion dollar mis-management, of the Colorado River. Where we go from here - is just being worked out. How's that for tackling the"Bureauacracy"'. ! • If you have any suggestions - having lived and worked in Utah - feel free to pass them along - unidentified as to source or under any conditions you say. While in Utah I worked |
