Show than the alternative routes. Alternative locations for the last portion of the aqueduct alinement between 5900 South and 2100 South would each involve more interference with housing and existing or planned highway developments. West Valley Canal An alternative to the Jordan Aqueduct considered earlier was the West Valley Canal in western Salt Lake Valley. Water for this canal would be released from project reservoirs on the Provo River and conveyed to Jordan Narrows through the Provo Reservoir Canal. A capacity of 100 c. f. s. was designed and constructed in the Provo Reservoir Canal for West Valley Canal water users. An extension of the present Jordan Narrows siphon and a new canal 18.5 miles in length with a 100 c. f. s. capacity would be required. The canal would serve 5j000 acres of land along the western slopes of the Salt Lake Valley above the existing Provo Reservoir Canal. Because of the rapid expansion of urban areas in western Salt Lake Valley during the past 10 years and the resulting decrease in irrigated land acreages, further expansion of irrigation would not appear to be a reasonable development. In the meantime, rights to the capacity reserved in the Provo Reservoir Canal were acquired by the Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake City and are now planned for use in delivery of municipal flows to the Jordan Aqueduct. 627 |
