Show as all of the presently irrigated lands are on the east side of the valley, the alternative locations of Mona- Nephi Canal were confined to that area. There are several similar alternatives for Mona Pumping Plant, varying in location along the east side of Mona Reservoir. The environmental impact would be similar at each location. Mona- Nephi Canal, Nephi- Sevier Canal, and Interstate Highway 1- 15 Relationship The proposed location of Interstate Highway 1- 15 would parallel Mona- Nephi Canal over most of its route from near the Utah- Juab County line to a point about 2 miles south of Nephi. It would also parallel Nephi- Sevier Canal for its first few miles. As soon as tentative locations for the canals and highway were known, cooperation was initiated between the Utah State Highway Department and the Bureau of Reclamation to minimize possible conflicts between these features. This cooperation has continued, with the Bureau paying the highway department for engineering studies needed to eliminate some of these conflicts. Through this cooperation, the number of crossings of 1- 15 over the canals has been reduced. The precast concrete pipe sections required to convey the canal under 1- 15 at the crossings would be laid at Bonneville Unit expense at the time the highway is constructed. The cost would be much less than if the pipe were laid after the highway has been constructed. Cooperation between the two agencies is expected to continue as plans for 1- 15 further south are prepared. Nephi- Sevier Canal This canal was proposed as part of the Bonneville Unit plan following publication of the 1964 Definite Plan Report. Through the Water and Power Board, the State of Utah resolved as a matter of policy that statewide water developments should give priority to satisfying supplemental irrigation needs over full- service irrigation needs. Studies show that 29,500 acre- feet of supplemental water could be delivered to Sevier Bridge Reservoir for use in the lower Sevier River area and by exchange in the central Sevier area for about the same cost as full- service irrigation in the Mosida, Elberta, West Mona, and Nephi areas0 Several different alinements were considered for conveying the water from Nephi to Sevier River Basin. 609 |
