Show Water Quality During construction there could be some short- term pollution of streams by silt, fuel, oil, etc. Provisions would be included in the construction specifications to reduce this hazard as much as practicable,, Long- term problems include an estimated increase in salt concentration of the Colorado River at Hoover Dam by 10 mg/ 1. This increase would result in a cost to downstream water users of approximately $ 414,000 per year. ^& Studies are being carried out at present to outline methods of reducing the salt content of the Colorado River. Other potential long- term pollution problems resulting from the Bonneville Unit would be municipal and industrial waste and herbicides and pesticides entering streams and polluting them. Municipalities receiving water would be required to conform with public health laws enforced by the State. Fossil Fuel Generation of power equivalent to the hydroelectric power that would be produced by the Bonneville Unit would require an estimated 175,000 tons of fossil fuel annually. This amount of fuel would then be " saved" for future generations use. 482 |
