Dens in inaccessible areas. Prefers remote timbered areas but roams over most mountainous habitats. Dens in caves of inaccessible areas. Prefers brush thickets in canyon bottoms near streams, but hunts in other habitats. Frequent rock slides, brush thickets of canyon bottoms and canyon slopes. Hunts and burrows in areas having ground dwelling rodents. Lower canyon slopes, alluvial fans and benchlands. Prowls canyon bottoms near stream. Often dens in rock slides and crevices of cliffs. Dens in rougher inaccessible areas of upper canyon walls, but is transient hunter in all areas. Roams entire mountainous areas. Follows migrating deer to winter range in lower canyon. Inhabits open meadows and parks and conifer timber at higher elevations in summer months. Known to occur in Upper McAfee Basin and head of Rock Creek drainage. Not known to use canyon bottoms in this area. Prefers to forage in shrub and aspen communities from canyon bottom to upper slopes including uplands. Populations are wide- spread in Rock Creek and North Fork of Duchesne drainages. Deer winter well below project area on Forest. A- 112 |
