Show Major Gillespie Following a standard set down in preceding years, the R. O. T. C. remains one of the strongest units of the Reserve Officers Training Corps. The university unit is in the Ninth Corps Area along with Leland Stanford University and Oregon State College. Although enrollment in the R. O. T. C. is elective, a greater part of the male population takes up this phase of schooling, feeling that a knowledge of field artillery is a necessary requirement for a complete university course. After completing the course given, students are commissioned second lieutenants in the field artillery of the Officers Reserve Corps. The University department of Military Science and Tactics, under the leadership of Major James A. Gillespie, is ranked as one of the highest units in the nation. He is ably assisted by Captain R. C. Snyder, in charge of the pistol team and a freshman instructor; Captain C. F. Murray, polo team and sophomore instructor; Captain M. L. Craig, junior instructor; and Captain P. C. Boylan, senior instructor. Gillespie, Snyder, Craig, Murray, Boylan Page 118 |
