Show THE PEOPLE WHO BROUGHT YOU THE PICTURE OF '59.UTONIANThe summer was begun with the excited flurry of planning and organizing. The layout was completed and we waited for the beginning of school. Fall was the time for meeting the other members of the staff, of recruiting freshmen at Welcome Week, and of beginning work, as the information and pictures began to trickle into the office. Then, the snow began to fall, and the light from the office windows glittered over the dark parking lot. Someone kept diluting the chemicals in the darkroom, the copy was always being misplaced, and a gang of well-organized thieves insisted on borrowing last year's Utonian from the editor's desk. And then the sun came out! As* the temperature went up, our grades went down. From the windows, we could see the Ballif students lounging in the sunâ€"their shouts drowned out by the roaring of the pin setters in the basement. With a last, longing look, we went back to our typewriters, or to the musty darkroom, where hoards of negatives awaited printing. Of course, being true believers in the old cliche about all work and no play, we sometimes went down for the Huddle Room's special coffee, or tried to borrow the flowers from the reception desk. We even did a little studying; after the custodians kicked us out at 11:00.Finally, the book was completed. We hated and loved it, but were relieved to have enough time left for finals. But we kept wondering what we would do with all our spare time during the summer. . . . Maybe we'll go lounge on the lawn at Ballif. The Utonian's Business Manager was Mary Gardner.272The Utonian is indebted to the following persons and establishments for making this year's book a possibility and reality:Lignell and Gill Photographers for the excellent portraiture included herein.Saans Photographers for their aid in the various pictures they supplied.Lorin Wiggins for the picture of Vice President Nixon with Maureen Derrick.Mercury Publishing Company; Frank, Sam, and all the others who pushed themselves to get the book finished.Mountain States Bindery for the binding and cover work on the book.Theron Parmelee and his secretary Fran for putting up with our harrassments during the year.Publications Council for their aid and guidance. The Exec Council for active interest on behalf of the book. The Salt Lake Tribune for athletic pictures. The office of Public Relations and Elizabeth Hagland for their aid.Dave Richardson for theatre coverage in photographs. The personal friends who helped when I was in a bind. And finally to all those people on the staff who worked many long hours they did to present the 1959 Utonian.Sincerely,Ray Laksen, editorIn charge of editorial aspects was Jane Watson, Associate Editor.Handling office work and appointments was Jeannette Ware, Assistant Editor. |
