Show The University and her greek way of life.Although they were still regarded by the outside viewer as a kind of aloof clan of individuals who were more interested in activities than in studying, Utah's Greeks produced some of the University's higher grade point averages, while maintaining most of its major activities. Theirs is a different kind of life with parties and exchanges, intramurals, and a goal of social development to balance the book-learning.The story of the Greeks begins with rush. Maybe it was the big-season show, or just one of the quarterly informal rushes; but it was the main introduction to fraternal life. It was exciting for most; it has to be as the lifeblood of the Greek system. The first entirely inter-relational affair of the year was Greek Week, which is purposed to create better feeling among the Greek organizations, and to stimulate stronger bonds of friendship. Characterized by a big exchange where the many members of the sororities and fraternities intermingled over cards, and snacks, and in dances; the week saw the start of more fun to follow. The Olympic Games brought the groups together again to participate in activities like the tug-o-war, the sack and relay races. Later the trophies were presented at the Banquet along with the Pledge of the Year and other awards. Then came Homecoming with the Greek house decorations, entries in the skits and quartets, alumni night, and what seemeq like a dozen other things to participate in. jProbably the next biggest time of the year was U Days, which seemed to have been made especially for the Greeks. Phi Delta Theta's waterfights riotously started the group going. Fire-hoses, wooden barrels, and general bedlam governed the afternoon. A lot of greeks thought that their big Songfest was a pain in the neck, but they survived to a greater or lessor degree. Everyone seemed to think that they would like to have dropped the whole thing. The next day, the greeks gathered themselves in front of Orson Spencer Hall to be a part of or just witness the Lambda Chi Alpha Pushcart Races. Twenty or thirty hours went into the building of a nice looking cart, and then with great haste, they were torn apart to make ready for the big races, which usually end up with an infraction of the rules. The best part of the whole festival to most people was the dance at Lagoon where everyone stood around and watched the charming senior be crowned queen of the year's last big event. But many other things go into making up a year for the Greek. All the letter groups have at least one formal a year. The big events occur in lodges and resorts everywhere from Brighton to Ogden Canyon, and they're usually climaxed by the presentation of queen or king to do the presiding.Of course, the normal prevalence of parties held their place throughout the year. Swimming, drinking and just general funmaking can govern the occasions no matter what the mode or style. |
