Show With a sophomore studded line-up, Utah's collegiate groaners turned in one of the finest mat seasons in the history of the Hilltop School. Sophomore Frank Hankin was the outstanding matman, going through the season undefeated, and winning the conference title. Tex Castro and Doug Bingham, a pair of sophomores, also went through the season undefeated in dual matches with both of them coming in runner-up in the Skyline Conference. Doug went to the nationals and got to the semi-finals. Also on this outstanding team was Jim Sheperd, whoWrestling Teamturned to wrestling after the gridiron season was over. Although he had a rough time getting down to the 177 limit, he did an outstanding job in that weight class. Utah had matches with many of their traditional Skyline Conference foes. BYU and Utah State were beaten twice. Other foes were Colorado Mines, Adams State, and Mesa Junior College, all of which were beaten soundly by the Redmen from Utah. Overall, this was the finest year that the Utes have ever had, compiling a record of 8 victories and no defeats. Utah, now more experienced, is looking forward to another fine year in wrestling competition.Wrestling Team (left to right): kneeling, Art Galvez, Gordon Nelson, Doug Bingham, Jerry Headington, Jerry Young; standing, Coach Marv Hess, Frank Hankin, Verl Castro, Jim Shepherd, and Glenn Payne.129 |
