Show STUDENT GOVERNMENTTHE LEADERSThe ASUU Executive Council, in recognizing that the University of Utah was lacking in an intellectual atmosphere, launched an intensive program in the hope of arousing greater interest in academic subjects and cultural activities. Present ASUU activities were carefully evaluated as to how well they met the needs of the entire student body. This evaluation led Bob Holt, leader of the council, to effect an expansion of the activities of administrations in an effort to meet the needs of the students intellectually and culturally as well as socially. Special attention was finally given to research into the activities and problems of the married students on campus, who make up one-fourth of the universities student body. Ron Eliason, ASUU Treasurer, who was married in September of 1958, well appreciated the value of such a program and with Dorothy Pohlman, was instrumental in carrying it out.Cultural ambitions were fulfilled, in part with the instigation of the Assembly Committee, which sought to raise the caliber of entertainment offered by the University. This program was re-flected in the establishment of the Traveling assembly program. The Forum was also established where surprisingly tangible results were achieved in creating interest, thought and discussion on current events and vital issues. Marilyn Colombo, ASUU Vice President, who has her own aspirations for visiting foreign countries, was the foremost protagonist of an effort to bring to the University the advantages of attending foreign student leaders. In conjunction with this, the council also promoted a variety of world travel programs which benefited many University students. But perhaps the result of which the council can be most proud is their success in bringing to the University a wide selection of artists from artistic circles and the intelligentsia. Carl Sanburg, Clement Atlee, and George Schearing were among the outstanding men brought to the campus as a result of the Exec. Council's long range and long needed program. All of these additional opportunities for intellectual and cultural advancement have served to increase the value of an education at the U. of U.Organizing and directing standing committeeactivities was the chief responsibility forthe ASUU Historian, Pat Parkinson.Vigilantes and election control were the major duties assigned to the ASUU Second Vice President, Grant Weed. The man who became "the University of Utah" for the year '58-'59 was the Exec Council President, Bob Holt, the student body's most important individual.17 |
