Show HOMECOMINGthis year without snow and with st victoryHomecoming Week saw the Utah campus a kaleidoscope of color, noise, and fun to the theme of "U's Imagination." Kent Vincent, chairman of the week of glee, aptly squeezed quantities of "Things To Do," into each day. Winning first places in the quartet competition were Alpha Chi Omega, for the sororities, and Sigma Chi, for the fraternities. The presentation of World War II with the original cast won for Kappa Sigma the trophy for skits. Huge decorations loomed ominously on front lawns, and Pi Beta Phi's beautiful underwater decorations to the theme "Pioneer Sunk Too Deep To Measure, Leaving Hoyo Victor's Treasure" won for them the first place honors. Pi Kappa Alpha won the fraternity competition with a giant pinball machine. With an ample supply of pledge power to do the dirty work, actives slipped off for an evening of fun at the Pi Phi-Sigma Nu street dance on Wolcott Street. To add a touch of glamour to the hammering and rehearsing came the selection of Homecoming roy-alty. Regal Charlotte Castetter reigned as queen, with Misses Kelly Colombo and Fran Campanero attending her. The beauties were presented at an assembly, another of the week's activities. Utes spent hours in preparation, exhausting nails, imagination, and crepe paper, to create unique floats. The winner in the fraternity-sorority competition was the beautiful float sponsored by Delta Sigma Pi in the form of a huge blue boat. The victor in the independent competition was AMS-AWS for their float, all in black, titled "Tribute To A Dead Pioneer." The highlight of the week was the game with the Denver Pioneers. The Utes not only came out victorious in the game with the pioneers by a score of 20-16, but they won back the huge Denver bell which the Colorado school had won the year before. As the ending to a full week, a thousand couples danced to Johnny Long's orchestra to a theme of "London After Dark."206 |
